Champ, Vermont’s Loch Ness Monster

A few days ago, Mom and I were watching this show on Discovery Channel that was about a known “Monster” who lives in Lake Champlain in Vermont. There are people who believe in Champ 152%. And then there are people who think that Champ is just a full blown myth. But there are people who are somewhere in the middle. There are people who think he could exist, but won’t make a decision until they see the proof of what thousands claim to see.

In Lake Champlain, in Vermont. Thousands of local residents by the lake claim to have seen Champ hundreds of times while others claim they saw a giant serpent gliding under the water for a few seconds, once. Although no one knows that Champ is truly 100% real, he is the town’s #1 tourist attraction. And the most action on Champ recorded on tape was by someone who lives a little ways off. And he comes out there every day with his video camera. And quite a few times, he’s caught Champ on video. But the most compelling piece of evidence that Champ truly exists, is a picture taken by Sandi Mansi. Sandi Mansi was watching a group of children when she saw the head of a large serpent sticking it’s head out of the water. And as quickly as she could she shot a picture of it. This is how it looked:

This photo of Champ, the Lake Champlain monster was taken by Sandi Mansi in 1977.

There isn’t much more information about Champ that I can offer you, but before I did this post I found you guys an awesome website link to a lot more information on Champ, Lake Champlain’s own, Loch Ness Monster.

  1. Wow! That’s some interesting stuff. It almost makes you believe in Champ, right? I don’t think I believe in Champ, but the world would be a much more interesting place if creatures like him and Nessie did exist, wouldn’t it?

  2. So if you don’t believe in Champ or Nessie What do you not believe in, like what are the people claiming to see. I know your not lying, like don’t get me wrong, I’m just curious to hear what they are saying is happening there.

  3. I think sometimes people see stuff and mistake it for something else. Sometimes, though, they do tell fibs about it.

It just seems incredibly unlikely to me that something of that huge size could survive in so densely populated an area for so long without being definitively discovered; especially when you also consider how many people have been actively looking for Nessie and Champ.

  5. I thought it was a very interesting program and I’m glad you posted about it. Some of the arguments and evidence in favor of Champ seem quite compelling. Like you, though, I need more to be fully convinced.

Interesting topic! I hope more people will chime in and tell us what they think. It’s certainly worth talking about.

  6. Fascinating story, John!

Personally, I have always had a weakness for this kind of thing. I’d love to believe in Nessie and Champ, but knowing what I do know regarding what would be required to sustain a community of these creatures (it’s pretty difficult to believe that, in the case of Nessie, for example just one could have existed on its own for so long), I find it increasingly difficult.

Regarding what people think they’re seeing. We have an incredible ability when it comes to pattern recognition. We don’t need, for example, to see a whole face to know that it is a face. This is pretty useful but, unfortunately, it can often prompt us to see things that just aren’t there — or aren’t there in the form that we think they are! The photo of Champ, for example, is very similar to one of the famous (now proved to be fake) photographs of Nessie. I bet you know the one I mean. It fits the pattern. People see it, make the comparison (possibly quite unconsciously) and, bingo, we have another monster.

Another thing that always amuses me. These photographs are always such poor quality! Back in 1977, when the photograph of Champ was taken, I had a rubbishy Kodak Instamatic camera and I never took a photograph as bad as that LOL

  7. John,

Champ fills a void in people’s lives to believe in something big, mysterious, and otherworldly. Some people use it as a crutch to get through an otherwise mundane existence.

    Do you believe in Sasquatch?

  8. Thanks Gary, I think you made some pretty good points. I’m just about to do a post on the upcoming U.S. election you should check it out!

  9. Timotheus,

I don’t think I believe in sasquatch (BigFoot) really. But I think it would be really cool if creatures such as him existed, our world would be much more interesting if they did.

  10. It really would be a more interesting world if such creatures existed, wouldn’t it?! If just one were found — whether it be Nessie, Sasquatch or the Abominable Snowman — we’d have to do some serious rethinking!

That said, our world is still fairly interesting as it is. Take a quick look at this when you have chance :) http://uk.video.yahoo.com/watch/2342111/7336952

(Will drop by later to have a good read of your election post, mate.)
